Levi's

In this post I want to talk about a piece that is in any woman, man or child wardrobe: jeans, and in particular the first on the market, the legendary Levi's.

Jeans are for more than a century the basic piece of informal wear, and tradition has it that they were invented in 1853 by Morris Levis Strauss who, with the help of his cloth merchants brothers in NY, had the brilliant idea of organizing a supplies service (fabrics, tools, furniture, etc.) to the gold miners scattered throughout California, then moved later to the production of trousers in series of fixed sizes.

The curious thing is that many distinctive signs that make this unique type of pants are not very functional, reminiscent of their own story around California:
• the copper rivets, required by a dealer in 1872 for reinforcing pockets to carry the weight of the stones gathered during the mining expeditions, which were decreased in the 50's after several complaints from the American schools due to the damage caused to the chairs and school's desks.
• the sewing M, introduced in 1872, which is said to symbolize the eagle of the mountains of California.
• the patch, the label with the model type, size, and the two horses that pull a pair of jeans, which was introduced in 1886 and changed from leather to cardboard in 1955.
• the tab, vertical label that bears the name of the brand and of different colors to distinguish the different lines, born in 1936.

After suffering for the emergence of competitors in the field of denim, the economic crisis of the 30s has forced many wealthy Americans to give up their summer travels in Europe and take refuge in the ranch, where they discovered the jeans and his legend thanks to cowboy heroes romantics who ruled the west in Hollywood movies (but in reality they were generally of the cowherds who looked after the cattle herds entrusted to them by their masters, and preferred to wear jeans more for their convenient quality of not soak up the odors that for their beauty).
The jeans, however, have taken root in Europe and the rest of the world after the Second World War, where the clothes of resting American soldiers exclusively manufactured by Levi's had become a symbol of wealth and freedom that the United States expressed: since the jeans were always identified with the idea of humility, simplicity and American comfort, free from the stiff relationship that European gents had with clothing.

In the years 60 and 70 also became a symbol of the equality of the sexes, and also because of their blue color, have always expressed positive meanings and 'democratization', as well as thanks to the dark blue stains are less visible: in fact blue has been also committed to the suits of the workers, characterized by another meaning of humility of the working world.

Also no jeans is equal to another: through the details, they highlight specific differences, the possibility to express the uniqueness of the person, modifying continuously as they absorb to itself all the life experiences of the wearer and keep the memory of their use.
This is the reason why new jeans are worth much less than the used ones. This is possible due to the nature of denim to become discolored with time and washings: the dye in fact is only applied to the threads before weaving, only at that vertical and not horizontal ones, and only on the outside. Of course today is different from the first decades, when the fabric of jeans was so stiff that it had to be worn wet to take the shape of the body.
